Check out these classic works of art that have been altered to have smiles

A smile can say a hell of a lot. Most obviously, it’s an expression of joy, but depending on the circumstance, that one little movement of the face can communicate a wealth of human emotion. Just think about it for a second: you’ve got a manic smile, a nervous smile, a desperate smile, a forlorn smile and a vertical smile. The list goes on and on and on. So when someone decided to digitally alter a s**tload of classic artworks, we knew you’d love the results.

If you’ve ever had much to do with the arts or with literature, you’re probably aware that happiness just isn’t as much of a theme in the great works as you think it might be when you’re a kid. Matter of fact, plenty of them aren’t just a bit moribund, they’re blatantly friggen depressing.

Now, we’re not going to give you an arts lecture here. We really don’t have the qualifications. As much as we might like to think we do, we just don’t. Of course, we reckon there are plenty of people out there in the comments section who can talk all day about Mona Lisa’s smile, Van Gogh’s style and the true meaning of American Gothic.

As for us, though, we’re just cracking up at the difference a simple smile can make. Have a bloody squiz at the fore-mentioned American Gothic painting. It’s gone from ‘A body out in the hayloft? Us?’ to ‘Oh, yeah, heaps of dead bodies out there, mate. Care to join us for dinner?’

Then there’s the Desperate Man painting. Somehow, the lunatic smile plastered across his face makes him look even more desperate. And how could we miss the Man With The Glove. He’s gone from looking like he’s gonna challenge you to a duel to looking like he’s about to tell you he’s used the glove as a makeshift cock-sock.
