Ross Kemp momentarily unable to speak after smelling inmate’s vape

If there’s one thing we’re pretty much all in agreement on, it’s that a bit of investigative journalism that cuts to the bone of social issues is grouse. And where that’s concerned, Pommy bloke Ross Kemp is one of the best in the business. He’s received tonnes of acclaim – and a BAFTA – for his investigations into gangs, and apparently, his new investigation into the UK’s prison system is gonna be pretty bloody interesting too.

In some early footage released by ITV, the channel behind Inside HMP Belmarsh with Ross Kemp.

Kemp shows that he’s not afraid to get down and dirty when he takes a vape off a prisoner messed up on Spice and gives it a bit of a whiff.

He says it all happened when “Prison officers and medical staff responded to a Code Blue, where a prisoner has difficulty breathing or is unconscious.” Unfortunately for him – and kinda fortunately for viewers – the tentative sniff he takes is enough to get him reeling. Have a watch of the footage down below to see what we’re talking about.

It’s worth noting that it’s not like he’s toking on the thing, he’s just giving it a casual sniff, and he’s probably feeling about a thousandth of the actual effects, but it goes to show how potent this stuff is.

“I can actually feel that,” he says. He explains how he barely touched it, but says, “Literally, I can feel that…st…st…” Then he stares dumbly at the camera, says, “Yeah, just like a bit…” and stares dumbly some more. He then seems to shake it off and says, “There you go! I couldn’t actually speak then!”

How much of it is played up for the cameras and how much is spot-on is up for debate, as always, but it seems like the new program might be a bit of an eye opener for the general public, particularly when it comes to UK the prison system.

Speaking to the Sun about the incident, Kemp said, “I am rarely lost for words, but as I turn to camera, I have lost the ability to speak. My brain has gone blank, my hands are clammy and my mouth is dry. I have just inhaled a tiny amount of spice residue left in a vape by a comatose prisoner.”

This particular version of Spice is known as “Man Down” – and it does exactly what it says on the tin. It is a potentially nasty combination of aluminium cleaner and insect killer, and the man who smoked it has collapsed.

Final thought: As we mentioned above, everyone loves a good bit of investigative journalism and Kemp’s one of the biggest names in the game. We haven’t got onto watching the show yet, but we reckon it’ll definitely be one that’s worth checking out. If you’ve managed to see it, let us know in the comments section. Till then, stay safe, ya big legends.
