Amazing moment as bloke on a 133km/h roller-coaster catches someone’s dropped phone

If you’ve ever been a fan of the cricket, you’ll know all about classic bloody catches. These are the catches that defy the odds, that laugh in their face of common sense, that piss on the line between impossible and ‘yeah, nah, I just did it anyway, cobber’. To put it more simply, they’re the kind of catches, you see when you least expect them. And that is what makes Kiwi legend Samuel Kempf’s recent classic catch one of the greatest we’ve seen in quite some time…

First of all, we need to get to know Samuel a little bit. Hailing from Timaru in the land of the long white cloud, this top fella was in Spain to represent the Kiwi national fistball team when he went for a bit of a mish to a theme park in Barcelona, PortAventura. While he was there, he experienced what just might be the greatest moment of his sporting life on the Shambhala roller coaster.

We’ll let him give you the rundown:

“The guy two rows ahead of me, as the ride started doing its ascent before it drops, he had his phone out and he dropped it and it just landed at the bottom of his cart.” As you can imagine, that’s going to be one of those moments that keeps everyone on their toes. After all, no one wants to cop a mobile phone to the bloody face while they’re doing twisty-spinny s**t in the air.

“He was trying to reach down and grab it but because he was locked in he couldn’t reach it and I just jokingly said to my brother and the people we were with ‘get ready to catch’.” From there, Kempf just kinda got lost in the moment and forgot about it. Until he was 80 metres in the air, traveling at 134 clicks. “The ride started and I totally forgot about it because I was just in the moment ’cause it was such a good ride and then after the first drop we rose up and I just saw the phone drift across my view so I reached out and managed to catch it.”

Best of all, the owner of the phone had no idea that Sammy-boy had taken it like a bloody pro. When Kempf tapped him on the shoulder to tell him he’d caught it, “He couldn’t believe it, he gave me a big hug.”

Still, though, according to Kempf, “The funniest reaction was when we had got off the rollercoaster and you go down to look at the photos and videos they take and half the people there seemed to be watching our screen and then everyone started cheering and clapping when it happened.”

Of course, with rules being what they were, the theme park people thought Kempf had taken his own phone on and weren’t going to sell him the footage. “We were like ‘nah, you need to watch the video, I caught it’ . . . eventually she decided to watch it and her mouth just dropped.”

The owner of the phone ended up buying Kempf the video as a thank you. Great stuff!

Final thought: Mate, have a watch of the footage and tell us whether you reckon you’ve ever seen a better catch. We reckon it’s up there with the best of them. How about you?
