Japanese scientists create robotic girlfriend hand for ‘lonely people’

If there’s one culture on earth that you just can’t pin down as adhering to a single stereotype, it’s the Japanese. These bloody legends are all about the height of politeness one minute, cute and quirky the next, and kinky as hell the minute after that. Yeah, nah, they’re layered, they’re complex, and they’ve invented a robotic girlfriend hand. Depending on where your mind goes, that’s either cute or kinky, and if you play your cards right, it’s both. Check it out…

You might be wondering why we’re sitting on the fence with this one, and the answer’s simple. From the basic images, the idea of a bloke being so lonely he just wants to hold a sheila’s hand is kinda tragic. The idea that a scientist might have provided a solution for that is kinda heartwarming.

And then there’s the other side of the coin. With one of these, Japanese blokes wouldn’t need to sit on their hand until it goes numb when they were having some special time. So, with that in mind, let’s have a closer squiz.

The hand was developed by researchers at Gifu University, and it’s designed to replicate the experience of a romantic walk with a partner. When you consider a widower remembering his lost love, it’s lovely.

The hand’s made of a pliable gel material, it detects pressure, and the fingers squeeze back. It even has a heating mechanism to replicate warmth, and can sweat through special pores – just in case you like the feel of a clammy hand.

The hand’s mounted on a sliding rail so it moves back and forth, creating a walking sensation. There’s even an accompanying app that plays the sound of someone moving beside you.

Yeah, look, we’re undecided. This seems pretty innocent, but you never know what someone’s really doing with the hand and its back and forth motion. Yeah, nah. We’re sus.

Final thought: Obviously, the technology’s awesome, and on a purely wholesome level, this is a f**ken godsend for some people. Then there’s the other level. Let us know what you reckon about it in the Facebook comments. Would you get one? What would you get it for?
