US bloke drops nearly $60,000 of COVID relief money on a single Pokemon card

If you know any other human being – or you have the internet – you’re no doubt aware that COVID has brought the best and the worst out of people. Yeah, nah, some people have shown themselves to be caring, compassionate and awesome. Others have shown themselves to be selfish, stupid, and completely uncaring of others. We’re not sure where the bloke in this story falls, but we’ve got a suspicion…

All right, if you’re a collector of any pop culture merchandise, you’ll know that sometimes supply and demand can really drive the price up on some of the things you really covet. That’s not anything new, it’s all part of the game, but there’s a bit of a universal truth in the idea that if you really really want the rare s**t, you need to be rich.

Of course, that s**t goes out the window when you see a way to exploit the system and get what you really want without asking whether or not it’s the right thing to do. Georgia man, Vinath Oudomsine knows this all too well.

After applying for $85,000 (US) of Economic Injury Disaster Loan money to help his business during Covid, he then spunked a fair whack of it on a Pokemon card. We’re not sure exactly which card it was, but we hope it was worth it, because he’s been caught and he’s now facing up to twenty years in prison and $250,00 US dollarydoos in fines.

Now, we’ll be honest, we don’t fully understand the implications of the loan money and whether it affects anyone else. We also reckon he could have made a calculated risk with the full intent of paying it back. We don’t know how this all played out and we’re gonna throw it over to you as to whether he’s a selfish bugger or just a silly sausage, but we can’t get past this:

Imagine doing the circle of new inmates at your prison and explaining what you’re in there for. You’ve got Billy-Ray on a murder charge, Cyrus on armed robbery, and Vinath on buying a Pokemon card. Damn.

F**KEN UPDATE: Vice has got us covered, you big bloody legends. They’ve found out the card old mate blew the cash on: a first edition base set charizard. If that means anything to you, let us know!

Final thought: All right, over to you lot. Is Vinath a silly sausage or is he a selfish bugger who deserves what’s coming to him? Let us know.
