Plumber hits legendary status after refusing payment from elderly woman
When you’re asked to think of the most legendary plumber you know, the chances are that you’re gonna opt for that famous video game bloke of Italian descent, Luigi. We reckon you really should rethink that and consider the bloke from today’s story. Yeah, nah, we hear you naysayers out there, but once you’ve read about old mate’s exploits, we reckon you’ll be down. So, let’s get to it. Meet Burnley plumber James Anderson…
James, as we’ve already hinted is the very definition of a top bloke.
He’s also a bloody legend and a truly nice guy.
Honestly, this friggen champion sacrificed time running his business as a contract plumber to create a not-for-profit organisation that makes sure elderly and vulnerable customers don’t get ripped off.
And, obviously, that’s a bloody top notch thing to do, but even within those parameters, he’s doing good works. Shortly after he went above and beyond to help a 91-year-old cancer patient by refusing to charge her a penny and to ensure his staff would be at her beck and call on a 24-hour basis, his legendary status has gone viral!
The invoice, which has been leaked online, reads:
‘No charge for this lady under any circumstances. We will be available 24 hours to help her and keep her as comfortable as possible.’
As we mentioned, though, this isn’t a one-off for Anderson. The bloody legend has literally put himself into debt in his bid to stop unscrupulous tradies taking advantage of the elderly and the vulnerable. After seeing an engineer take advantage of an old bloke, he started to limit his private work and created the not-for-profit, Depher.
Depher helps the sick and the elderly make sure their plumbing is in good nick throughout the cold winter months in Lancashire. At the moment, he’s crowdfunding the organisation, and he’s 8 grand in debt. And the bloke’s such a bloody champ, that doesn’t even bother him.
‘A lot of people close to me ask: why are you getting yourself in to debt? Why are you doing this? ‘To me, debt is debt… I would rather owe some money to somebody and another person be alive and happy and safe. ‘It’s an ethos that’s in my heart and it will always stay there.’
In true legend fashion, he’s not planning on stopping anytime soon. Yeah, nah, he’s trying to get the organisation spreading its wings and working nationwide.
‘I’ve spoken to quite a few engineers around the country and they’re all for it… it’s just getting the funding. ‘I don’t want any person who is elderly and disabled in this country, in this day and age, to die or suffer because of a cold home or a lack of funding to repair the boiler. ‘It shouldn’t be happening – that number should be down to zero. Simple as that.’
Final thought: If you’ve ever seen how hard it can be to keep the utilities ticking over when there are big medical bills and stresses in play, you’ll know what a bloody boon this is for those in need. We can’t help but keep repeating the central theme of this piece: Anderson’s a bloody legend. Help him out if you can!
