Designer challenges himself to create logos with hidden meanings, the result is incredible

You don’t have to be a word-nerd or a Dad to appreciate a good bit of wordplay. The truth is, wordplay really is a fundamental part of our language, and anyone can do it. Deadset, it’s as simple as enjoying the way different sounds can affect meaning or reference other ideas. Of course, wordplay doesn’t only have to be about sound though. In this day and age, a good graphic designer can have just as much fun by experimenting with a few visuals. And that’s exactly what Swedish designer Daniel Carlmatz does in the images below…

Carlmatz is a man who clearly loves a bit of wordplay himself. That’s probably why he set himself the epic task of creating typographic logos for new words every day for one year. He even set himself with some pretty strict rules. He could only use negative space, geometry, symbolism and the relevant word.

He told Bored Panda, “The inspiration for the 365 day challenge came from trying to challenge myself to look at type and design from a different perspective. The challenge was just an outlet for my personal design thinking. And yes, I did manage to finish it without missing a day!”

Daniel bloody smashed it. He made it through the year and came up with a s**tload of awesome logos.

“I didn’t want them to take up too much of my time so I used to do them in my head or sketch them down on my way to work, and then finalize them on my way home from work. But sometimes you just end up with nothing. I had a few words I felt I wanted to do, but a lot of the ideas came from having a solution first – and trying to find a suitable word that could support it. One of the hardest words was Panda, which was with me from day one, but wasn’t published until day 251.”
