Pommy pub rebuilt ‘brick by brick’ after illegal demolition
Mate, if there’s one thing we love about the poms, it’s that those f**kers love their beer as much as we do. Deadset, there’s a reason they’ve got pubs on every corner. Of course, their love of the buggers goes way beyond just being a great place to have a pint; yeah, nah, the pubs in Pommyland are a vital part of the landscape. With their distinctive appearances, they hold a special place in the hearts of the locals, and that’s why we’ve gotta share this story.
To be honest, there’s too much here to give you an in-depth look at the whole thing, but the gist of the story is that when locals started to suspect that developers were going to f**k them over and smash down the pub, they took action: they had English Heritage consider listing the joint.
That turned out to be a master-stroke, because, as you’ll see in a minute, it meant the courts could make some pretty f**ken epic orders. Before we get to that, though, the developers did, in fact, smash down part of the pub.
The locals, irate as f**k, took it to the courts, and the Rebuild the Carlton Tavern campaign – and Polly Robertson, one of its leading members – were like, “Yeah, nah.” Polly told the Guardian that people thought, “It’s not worth it, nothing’s going to happen’. And I just thought, no – I’m not going to let it lie.”
Now, the pub will reopen for the first time in six years, and that’s all thanks to the Rebuild the Carlton Tavern campaign and the work they did. So, to sum up, two days before English Heritage could declare the pub a heritage site, the owners f**ken smashed half of it down.
And that kicked the campaign into action, which led to Westminster Council ordering the owners to “Rebuild the pub brick by brick.”
“They said it would be too difficult to do, but we had an answer for that,” Robertson said. “We had a suspicion before the demolition that they would do something, so we asked English Heritage to think about listing it. They took a plaster cast of every tile, they took pictures and documented everything.”
Now, with pubs due to reopen after the lifting of lockdown laws, the Carlton Tavern will be opening its doors for the first time in six years. We reckon the celebrations will be something else.
Final thought: Mate, never think that people power can’t win against the big dogs. Those f**kers’ll take plenty if you let ‘em, but if you stand up to the b**tards, they’ll often find out that bully-boy tactics just don’t cut it in the face of common-sense. F**ken good s**t!
