A man has been killed attempting to convert extremely isolated tribe to christianity

Like it or not, the world is f**ken chock-a-block with extremely dangerous places. Usually, when we’re warned to stay away from certain places – and people – because of the simple fact that the going there is likely to get you f**ked up, we take heed. Most folks don’t just assume ‘she’ll be right, mate’ and make there merry way into the maw of danger. Of course, you can’t protect everyone and from time to time people either have to learn the hard way – or sacrifice themselves as an example for us all…

This brings us to the story of US citizen, John Allen Chau and his short visit to the very, very deadly North Sentinel Island. If you haven’t heard of North Sentinel Island and you don’t know about the Sentinelese, pay close attention. These folks have remained isolated from the rest of us for close to 55,000 years, and they don’t play well with others.

They legitimately do not want a bar of modern civilisation or progress. Located in the Bay of Bengal, between India and Myanmar, it’s a heavily forested island and it’s completely illegal to set foot on it because, well, because apart from protecting the hundred or so Sentinelese who live there from modern diseases and bacteria, the local tribes usually f**ken kill anyone who comes too close.

They’re known for firing arrows at helicopters who’ve come to check on them after tsunamis, and for murdering fisherman who’ve accidentally drifted in range of their bows. So to hear that Chau had fishermen drop him close enough to the island to kayak to shore because he thought he could meet the Sentinelese and make contact with them only highlights his folly.

The fishermen who delivered him to the natives reported that he was fired on with arrows as soon as he got there, but he continued walking towards the Sentinelese. Members of the tribe were seen tying a rope around his neck and dragging his body along the shore. Those fishermen fled the scene but returned the next morning to find Chau’s corpse.

Seven of those fishermen have since been arrested by Indian police as the islands are technically under the control of the Indian Union and they are being held as culpable for his death. So far, Chau’s body remains uncollected.

Final thought: This is, obviously, f**ken tragic, but you have to shake your head. We’ve had plenty of warnings and we’ve got plenty of evidence that the Sentinelese do not f**k around. Our thoughts go out to Chau’s family in what is obviously a tough situation.
