Conjoined twins with fused brains successfully separated in ‘space-age’ surgery!

F**k me sideways, we live in a special f**ken era. Yeah, nah, don’t get us wrong, every era’s got tonnes of cool technological advances and ground-breaking surgeries, and we can only imagine what the future holds, but s**t is pretty f**ken spectacular right now. Take this story for example. Thanks to a ‘virtual reality room’ allowing them to collaborate, doctors have successfully separated conjoined twins with a fused brain. Yeah, nah, that’s special.

All right, for a bit of context and to make sure we speak about these two little legends like the human beings they are, the twins are Bernardo and Arthur Lima, and they’re a couple of little champions.

Even before separation, they’d defied the odds to live as long as they had. Check these hectic stats out: one in 60,000 births results in conjoined twins. Every year, about fifty of these are joined at the head – and of those, only 15 make it past the first thirty days of life. To put that in perspective, Bernardo and Arthur are f**ken three!

Anyway, thanks to the help of Gemini Untwined, a kickass charity, these little blokes are now longer joined at the head. Yeah, even though their brains were fused, the doctors have managed to separate them. Better yet, Great Ormond Street Hospital paediatric surgeon Noor ul Owase Jeelani reckons they’re recovering well.

When speaking about the surgery, Jeelani says this was the first time ever that medics in separate countries wore headsets and operated in the same virtual reality room. He claimed it was ‘space-age stuff’ and said, “It’s just wonderful, it’s really great to see the anatomy and do the surgery before you actually put the children at any risk.

He continued by saying, “You can imagine how reassuring that is for the surgeons. In some ways these operations are considered the hardest of our time, and to do it in virtual reality was just really man-on-Mars stuff.”

The surgery was funded by Gemini Untwined, and Jeelani reckons, “The successful separation of Bernardo and Arthur is a remarkable achievement by the team in Rio and a fantastic example of why the work of Gemini Untwined is so valuable.”

Final thought: Yeah, nothing to say here except that we love this s**t. It’s really easy to see the news and feel nothing but doom and gloom, but this is some amazing s**t. F**K YES, BERNARDO! F**K YES, ARTHUR! F**K YES!
