Legendary bloke who planted a tree every day for 40 years has created an unbelievable forest

True dedication, that undying commitment to a goal, is a rare trait. Sure, there are blokes and blokettes out there who work hard for things and devote plenty of time to them, but how many of you can say you know someone dedicated enough to spend forty years of their life planting a forest that’s now bigger than New York’s Central Park?

That’s exactly what Indian legend, Jadav Payeng has done. Every day since he was sixteen years old, this top f**ken bloke has planted at least one sapling in the previously barren soil of the Majuli Island in Assam, India. As a result, the island, which was basically a large mudflat when he started, now spans 1360 acres of verdant green forest and features Bengal tigers, rhinos, vultures and 115 elephants.

As a young fella, the green-thumbed bloke was worried about the erosion on his home island. Now, it’s a bloody paradise. Amazingly though, his work went unnoticed until 2007 when a photojournalist stumbled upon his magnum opus. That bloke was Jitu Kalita, and he was so impressed by what he saw that he created a docco you can watch below…

When he first discovered Payeng’s efforts, he thought he’d stumbled on a mirage. “I began walking towards it and when I reached it I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had found a dense forest in the middle of a barren wasteland.”

Since then, Payeng has garnered some kudos for his passion. He received a Padma Shri civilian award from the Indian government for his work, and scientists have praised his efforts. Dr Arup Kumar Sarma from the Indian Institute of Technology said: “Payeng has already shown the example that if one person can, at his own effort, do this kind of plantation, then why not others.”

Payeng, for his part, has vowed to keep planting until his dying breath and hopes his forest will one day cover 5000 acres.

Final thought: Geez, we sometimes throw the word ‘legend’ around a bit easily in comparison to this bloke. What else can be said? Payeng, this Top Bloke Award is all yours. F**ken enjoy it, big fella.
