Farmers are protecting calves from frostbite with custom earmuffs and its bloody genius

Let’s be honest, no one likes being extremely cold. Not only is it pretty bloody uncomfortable, it can also make a right mess of you. Frostbite is nothing to be sniffed at, everyone knows that. What might not be realised by everyone, though, is that we humans aren’t the only creatures that are afflicted by it. Yeah, nah, despite their fur, farm animals like cows can get a mad case of frostbite too.

Obviously, disgruntled and frostbitten cows are no good.

It’s not only bloody painful; it’s something that can be avoided.

Also, cows with frostbite might need to be put down, and that’s a waste of bloody good meat.

Anyway, the point of this story is that farmers are helping their calves endure freezing weather – and minimising the risk of frostbite – by giving them earmuffs. As a result, there are tonnes of calves looking like the kindergarten version of Bane right now.

According to Dr W Dee Whittier, an expert on the subject, “Newborn calves are most at risk (of frostbite) because they are wet and because they have a large surface area in relation to their total body mass.”

He reckons, “Calves are not fully capable of maintaining temperature the first several hours of life. Newborn calves have a circulatory system that is less able to respond to cold changes as compared to more mature animals.”

With that in mind, you can’t blame these farmers for looking after their stock – and providing the world with some bloody grouse images. And, yeah, sure, the expert might point out that, “Frozen ears and tails result in changes of cattle appearance but do not affect cattle performance significantly,” but let’s be honest: a happy cow equates to a happy barbecue.

Bloody wrap ‘em up and keep ‘em cosy, we reckon.
