Deep sea fishing accident left this bloke looking like Popeye

You’ve probably heard that ascending too quickly when you’ve been in the deep sea for an extended period of time is a pretty quick way to f**k yourself up. After all, it’s not a secret. What you might not realise is just what exactly the effects of pulling a stunt like that can be. For a quick lesson, take a look at Alejandro ‘Willy’ Ramos. This shellfish diver was forced to surface for air after a ship cut his oxygen line. The effects of it, well. Have a f**ken squiz.

Rightio, big Willy – as we’ve already established – was a shellfish diver off the coast of Southern Peru. This is a risky business. Not only are there big f**k-off sharks to contend with, there’s also the risk of the dreaded bends.

Unfortunately, while most divers have the know-how to avoid the bends (which is when bubbles from dissolved gases form in the blood or in the soft tissue), sh*t can still happen. Yeah, fair dinkum. Just ask big Willy, who now looks like the f**ken Michelin Man.

Willy was a hundred feet underwater, collecting shellfish when a cargo ship crossed his oxygen line and condemned him to a pretty sh*tty situation. It’s not exactly Destination F**ked, but it’s right next door. Forced to surface far more quickly than he should have – it was either that or drown – Willy is still feeling the effects.

“I kept swelling and swelling,” he said. “My arms swelled to an incredible size.”

As a result, he’s added 28kg to his weight and lives on a diet of painkillers to deal with the suffering. Unfortunately, without a job, Willy has been able to afford treatment. Luckily for him, the Naval Medical Centre is now looking at the case. Apparently, they reckon some time spent in a high-oxygen chamber might help to repair some of the damaged tissue.

F**ken good luck, dude. We reckon you’re gonna need it.

Final thought: This is one of those sh*tuations where you can’t help but feel for the bloke involved. We’re not sure whether they were diving in the wrong spot or the cargo ship was cruising around where it shouldn’t have been, but hopefully it all works out for Willy.
