This journo investigated the bloody gems found at your typical Australian Charity Shop
The op shop. The charity shop. The local thrift store. Whatever you call it, we’ve no doubt you know what it’s like inside one. We all do. S**t, whether we’ve visited one in desperation or whether we’ve gone in there looking for that specific thing, we’ve probably all noticed that they share a whole bunch of similarities. Now, an interesting look inside an Australian op shop has popped up on Vice and it’s well worth a squiz.
All right, so look, we know some of you out there in the comments section, are gonna ask if it’s a slow news day, and the answer is, ‘yeah, obviously,’ but aside from that, you have to admit that an op shop – as we call ‘em in Oz – is a uniquely cultural experience.
Deadset, consisting mostly of items belonging to the generations before us, and a whole bunch of dead man’s shoes, they’re the kinda place that are a window to the past. And, we’ll be honest, when we had a look at this report of one on Vice, we were kinda transfixed.
Seriously, have a read of some of these lines and a look at some of these pics and tell us you can’t smell the place.
Of course, when it comes to clothing, the author of the piece, Julie Fenwick, has it summed up: the women’s section is full of dresses: “Everything is either leopard print or some kind of flower pattern. It is all either too big or too small,” but the men’s is something else. “…two tiny racks…filled with short sleeved collared polos in every sort of blue: spots, stripes, plaid! All you need now are the knee-long khaki shorts and your dreams of being a middle-aged dad are set to manifest.”
But of course, everyone knows the real joy in op-shopping is seeing the kinda s**t your grandparents had in their kitchen when you were a kid: “Aside the kooky-collection of white plates with ornamental flowers and silver candle holders comes the ceramic cups.”
From there, you’ve got the bookshelves, and despite the Australian location, it’s all Dan Brown. “You pick up a book. It’s Dan Brown’s Inferno. “Hm, not this time”. You pick up another. Dan Brown The Lost Symbol. “Huh, another one by Dan Brown?”. You look up at the shelf. Nothing but Dan Brown. The Da Vinci Code is missing. You’ll find it next time.”
Anyway, if this rings a bell for you, go to your local op shop and take a photo of something that matches. Share it in the comments section.
Final thought: Look, while we make jokes about slow news days, there’s plenty going on in the world, and the good people of Ukraine are still in drastic need of assistance. If you wanna donate to the Red Cross in Ukraine, f**ken click this.
