One of the world’s biggest and rarest sea creatures washes up on an Australian beach

As you know, there are bloody billions of weird-looking beasts dwelling in the depths of the ocean and in the coastal waters out to sea. Yeah, nah, you’ve undoubtedly heard the old adage that we don’t know half of what’s out there, and that might be true, but we get glimpses every now and then when weird s**t washes up on the beach. Well, that’s happened again, and this time, one of the ocean’s biggest and rarest fish has just been found on a beach on Victoria’s coast.

Husband and wife, Cath and Tom Rampton, who are both vets, were taking in a nice stroll on the beach at the mouth of the Kennett River on Victoria’s south-western coastline when they found a bloody sunfish.

Talking to the Geelong Advertiser, Tom said, “We were walking along and saw this big lump on the sand. I’ve never seen anything like that before. It looked like an alien from a distance.”

To be honest, we’re not surprised. The weird looking b**tard looks a bit alien-like up close too. Have a squiz at it.

If you’re not too sure what they are, Sunfish are big bloody fish that look a bit bloody strange, but are blessed with a pretty decent size. These f**kers can grow up to three metres long and four-and-a-half metres tall. On top of that, they can weigh two-and-a-half tonnes.

Speaking specifically about this one, Cath reckon, “’My understanding is it’s not a very big specimen, I think they can get up to double that size.”

The fish are vulnerable in the wild, but fish collection manager of the South Australian Museum, Ralph Foster, says, “They are actually quite common in Australian waters but they are generally further out to sea.”

For what it’s worth, they’re apparently a delicacy in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, so if you happen to find one of these big rare b**tards, don’t be scared to cook up some chips and see how she goes on the barbie.

Final thought: Bringing it back full-circle, we have to say we didn’t know too much about these buggers. Still, they might be weird-looking, but how f**ken cool is it that a fish like this can get that big? Anyway, let us know what you’d do if you found one of these things on your morning stroll. You know where to post your comments.
