Bloke sacked for living in work cubicle to get “free” rent
It doesn’t seem to matter where in the world you are, times are tough right now. Yeah, nah, deadset. The rising cost of living is leaving people without much choice in their accommodations, workplaces are cracking down on expenses they don’t deem ‘essential’, and people are doing what they can to make ends meet. Like the bloke in this story. When he found himself needing new digs, he moved into his work cubicle, and then he found himself without a work cubicle when they gave him the flick.
The bloke in question is Chibuzor Ejimofor, who goes by the name Simon Jackson. In a video he initially shared on TikTok – and which has since been viewed 12 million times – he says, “I’m moving from my apartment into my cubicle at work. They do not pay me enough to do both, so as a matter of protest, I am just going to live at my job, and we’ll see how long I can get away with this.”
Unfortunately, it turned out the answer was ‘not long.’ Yeah, nah, the problem with videos going viral is that they can also be seen by your HR department. That little problem right there was the stick in Jackson’s spokes.
“When I found my company had an empty office downtown, this was the perfect solution as it was close to all of the venues I frequent and it would be free,” he told the New York Post. He also said that it would have “lasted indefinitely” if he hadn’t posted videos about it.
HR called him on the phone and gave him the arse as soon as they could, but Jackson’s choosing to look on the bright side. He also moonlights as a Romper designer and reckons, “I’ve gotten so many views now, so maybe I can take that and work on building my brand. I can always find another job if that doesn’t work out.”
And you know what. That sounds like a pretty decent way of looking at it. Yeah, nah, he f**ked about and he found it, but in doing so, he’s created an opportunity to build something better. That’s why we love his final thoughts about what’s next: “Until then, follow my travels and connect with me on IG or TikTok!”
Final thought: Bloody Simon sounds like he’s got his head screwed on, and you’ve gotta love his outlook on life. Here’s hoping it all works out and that one day he can return to that company with his head held high and a million-dollar Romper company in his back pocket.
