11-year-old Tassie Sheila rescues stranded shark – with her bare hands

Here in Australia, we’re pretty proud of national treasures like Steve Irwin and his family. We bloody love the way those legends are warriors for wildlife, and we friggen love it when we see their passion has rubbed off onto the youth of today. In this week’s news, a young Tassie sheila has shown that the Irwins aren’t the only ones who can rescue wildlife with the stellar save of a stranded draughtboard shark. Check it out below…

For a bit of context on this one, draughtboard sharks are a pretty common species in Tasmanian waters. They’re completely harmless, but their inquisitive nature is to blame for them getting stranded in rock-pools at low tide. Luckily for the one that’d got itself in trouble in this video, little Billy Rea Gilbert was on the job!

Billy Rea is another young legend when it comes to wildlife. She’s helped loads of orphaned and injured animals, and when she discovered the stranded shark, she set to work and rescued it.

We won’t give you a detailed breakdown because you can watch it below, but her Mum’s got the goss on the event.

“She just had this innate sense that it was there…and she just, without letting me know what was happening or doubting herself at all, she just went straight down. It was wedged between these two rocks right in the shallows. It was really low tide, and as soon as it came into view, I knew what it was and I knew it couldn’t hurt her.”

Apparently, Billy Rea’s got experience with draughtboard sharks after falling in love with them at the Marine Discovery Centre at Woodbridge, on Tasmania’s South Coast. “She was so passionate about these beautiful sea creatures that one of the volunteers at the marine discovery centre actually hand-sewed her a draughtboard shark toy.”

Since rescuing the shark, the video’s been seen by over four-million people.

Final thought: Keep up the tops work, Billy Rea. This is the kind of mintox attitude that’s gonna make the world a better place for everyone. Deadset, with top sheilas like you about, Planet Earth’s in good hands. Good stuff, Billy Rea. Good stuff!
