Melbourne Cup attendees get sh*tfaced and head straight to Destination F#*ked

Ah, the Melbourne Cup, for many it’s just another day of brutality and animal cruelty on Australia’s horse-racing calendar, for others it’s a day to get completely f**ken shellacked while horses race while carrying tiny men. However you see it, we can all agree that it’s a day when people across the nation get frocked up for a bit of turfside fun. Here’s some photos showing people have had probably a little too much ‘fun’.

A quick look at these photos will provide cursory evidence of the fact that all around the country, sheilas and blokes everywhere are chucking the proverbial ‘sickie’, skipping work and throwing their money away on the horses.

They call it the ‘race that stops the nation’ but having a squiz, I’m not sure it’s the race doing that or the copious amounts of alcohol that go with it. Yeah, nah, it’s probably the alcohol. Some might say the race gets people going. Horses who hurt themselves however, the race definitely stops those b**tards.

Don’t get me wrong, we’re not gonna go vegetarian on ya, but there’s a pretty big difference between killing an animal for meat or because it’s a threat and doing it for sport. There seems to be a general consensus that trophy-hunting is pretty f**ked, and it’d be remiss of us not to mention that the RSPCA’s figures show six horses have died in the cup since 2013. It’s not exactly trophy-hunting, but it’s a pretty sad part of the industry that doesn’t really receive enough scrutiny. Should it have more eyes looking at just how necessary the deaths are and whether an independent body should look at the health of horses beforehand? What do you reckon?

Fixing the issue isn’t an easy solution. Getting rid of the races all together would be a bit of a travesty, but we have to ask the question and we want to know what you blokes and blokettes think.

Final thought: Look, we’re a little torn. People do love the races and it is a big day on the calendar for millions of people, but something’s got to be done about the inherent cruelty, surely? Post your thoughts on the matter in the comments.
