Beekeeper tricks greedy bears into becoming honey tasters after they kept stealing his honey

We all know that bears are pretty bloody keen on honey. And, just quietly, if you are one of those blokes who thought it was all just a myth, it’s not. Yeah, bloody deadset, they love the stuff. And that was a big problem for Turkish agricultural engineer Ibrahim Sedef. After trying to keep bears away from his beehives for friggen yonks, he decided to try another attack. He decided to lure them away from the hives with a table full of honey, turning them into unwitting taste-testers in the process…

For this one, we’re heading somewhere we haven’t been in a while. Bloody Turkey. Specifically, we’re heading to Ibrahim’s place in Trabzon. Before he came up with the great idea, the poor fella had been having a hard time keeping the bears away from his beehives.

As you can imagine, hungry bears can really ruin your day when they come and raid your beehives. The big bewdiful beasties aren’t exactly known for their tact and subtlety, so it’s obvious they can tear a beehive to pieces in no time at all.

And, er, yeah, that only becomes more apparent when you hear that even metal cages around the hives didn’t stop the bears from getting into that sweet goodness. On top of that, the cheeky buggers couldn’t even be lured away by strategically placed treats of bread, fruit and honey.

Basically giving up on the fact that the bears were going to steal his honey – and his pic-a-nic baskets – regardless, he decided he could at least learn from their movements. He installed photo trap cameras to catch the b**tards in the act. He then set up tables with different flavoured honey to see what the big ursine pricks thought was best.

It turns out, they know what they’re talking about. They were often seen avoiding the cherry blossom honey and going straight for the Anzer. If you have your money and you know your honey, you’ll know that’s the good stuff!

Final thought: Credit where it’s due, this is definitely an easy way to make the best of a bad situation. And, yeah, we know it’s got nothing on Russian bear stories, but it’s still pretty good, right? Let us know how you’d deal with bears in the comments section.
