Cop busy texting on his phone drives his car straight into a cyclist

Of all the people in the world who most definitely should not be using their mobile phone while they drive, you’d have to say the boys in blue are right up there. They’re supposed to be role models, exemplary citizens and beacons (or should that be bacons) of virtue in a world gone astray, so when one rogue officer uses his phone while driving and then drives straight into a stationary cyclist, you have to laugh…

Look, cyclists do cop a lot of sh*t, and I’m not going to say it’s entirely undeserved. They do have flaws (will someone please tell them they’re supposed to ride inside the bike lane), but generally speaking they’re getting traffic off the roads, reducing emissions, and singlehandedly making sure the café industry is lucrative as f**k.

However, you’d really be pushing sh*t uphill if you were to say the cyclist in this video, William Fasanello, was at fault. In fact, he’s completely not. The cop though, Charles Wallace? Well, he’s made a right William of himself here.

Yeah, nah, we can't blame the cyclist here. This guy's not even paying attention. Credit: William Fasanello

Poor old Fasanello is waiting patiently at the intersection for his chance to get in the way of cars on a stretch of road and, presumably, have some abuse hurled his way, when Officer Wallace cruises around the corner and ploughs straight into the poor b*stard.

In the interests of fairness to everyone, I’m not entirely sure Fasanello couldn’t have back flipped out of the way and that means he probably still deserves some blame (he is a cyclist after all), but what the f**k was Officer Wally up to? He has f**ked up big time here. I mean, I’m sure even the most ardent multi-tasker would say you shouldn’t attempt an intersection while not watching the road.

I’ll let you watch the video to see just how it pans out, but you’ve got to respect that Officer Wallace completely owns his mistake and does the right thing to make sure he avoids a conflict of interest and having some other officers file the report. Apparently, he’s on leave while an investigation is conducted.

Final thought: This is just poor form from Officer Wallace. Sure, he’s taken it on the chin, but f**k me sideways, it’s pretty hard to give him the benefit of any doubt here. Bloody Fasanello took it well, and can probably count himself lucky that he’s walking away, but bugger. That’s a pretty monumental cock-up – even if Wallace is professional and fair about it afterwards.
