Centre For Disease Control Sent This Warning To Stop People Eating This From Their Body
It’s a craze that churns lots of conflicting views… and a lot of stomachs. We’re talking about adults eating human placentae.
The placenta is a sack that provides babies with nutrients whilst still in the womb. Post-partum, placentae are surplus to requirement and either discarded as medical waste or in many cases, given to the parents to use at their leisure.
Once extracted, the placenta kind of resembles a deflated jellyfish. To most, it seems quite unappealing as a food in this state. But many folks spruik the benefits of this nutrient-rich organ.
Naturally high in all kinds of nutrients, it’s even one of the few types of meat can even be viewed as vegan-friendly under certain points of view. Many argue that eating the placenta is not necessary as humans get ample nutrition from the food we eat.
This hasn’t stopped companies from cashing in on the Placenta eating movement. In the US, you can get a Placenta Smoothie freshly blended at your hospital bedside which is touted as naturally stimulating breast milk production in mothers. I don’t remember seeing that on those blender infomercials! Besides smoothies, people have used placentae in a variety of dishes including pancakes, tacos (for a bit of Mexican action) or the perfect addition to a cheeseboard: pate.

The Centre for Disease Control in the US issued a warning not to consume placentae after an Oregon baby got sick. It was revealed that the mother had her placenta dehydrated, ground up and used to fill capsules. Unfortunately, this process didn’t kill off existing bacteria which was then passed on to the child resulting in infection.

Luckily, a round of antibiotics has meant the baby is fine.
Whilst we seem to be doing fine as a species without consuming placentae, it doesn’t mean they should go to waste. Companies have used the organ in beauty products. A placenta hair mask is an excellent alternative to condition hair. Glazing oneself with a placenta face mask restores the skin’s natural firmness making the wearer look and feel years younger!
Let’s hope supply can meet demand!
